EARWIGS

 Accidentally a nuisance

There are 22 known species of earwigs (Dermaptera) in North America. Despite their formidable appearance, earwigs are considered only minor pests of plants, and their accidental non-dangerous invasion into homes a nuisance. Their name produces the unfounded fear that they crawl into people’s ears.

Earwigs can be destructive to garden vegetables, flowers, stored grains, and greenhouse plants. Leaves and petals damaged by earwigs may have a ragged appearance with multiple irregular-shaped holes. The first step to earwig control is sealing entry points such as cracks, crevices, nooks and crannies, as well as installing weather-stripping around doors and windows in order to reduce entry points.
